Problems sleeping in children are very common in the first few years of life. Some problems include: not wanting to go to sleep, not staying asleep, nightmares, and sleepwalking. Babies don’t have a regular sleep cycle until close to 6 months of age. Most newborns sleep about 16-17 hours a day….but that can be 1 to 2 hours at a time. Things to help: keep your baby calm and quiet when feeding or changing his/her diaper at night, make daytime playtime-talking and playing more during the daytime hours, put your baby to bed when drowsy but still awake. This helps your baby learn to fall asleep on her own and in her bed. Wait a few minutes before responding to fussing to see if she can fall back to sleep on her own.
